Mean Girls: A high school chick flic surrounding the main character, Cady Heron, played by Senior Caitlin Day, and the infamous “Plastics,” a group of “bitchy” popular girls, Karen Smith, played by Senior Kylie Roach, Gretchen Wieners, played by Sophomore Vivian Lonczak, and the Queen Bee, Regina George, played by Senior Peyton Brennan. Cady, a girl from Africa, joins North Shore High after being homeschooled all her life, where she meets Janis Ian, played by Senior Eris Learned, and Damian Leigh, played by Senior Jack Favata, the “Art Freaks.” The pair encourages Cady to join the “Plastics” to gain insight into their “girl world” of rumors and tantalizing gossip.
In the LHS Drama Club’s recreation of this film, they encapsulated the heart of the characters, making near-perfect recreations of the characters. The singing from the cast was beautiful, and if not for the poor quality of the mics, which led to the audio cutting out every few minutes, it would have been nearly perfect. This was no fault of the cast, however, so with their high-quality singing and choreography, this is in the running for one of the best performances that I have seen come out of Ludlow High. The dancing of both the stars and the background characters was well choreographed to fit the music and line up with the beats excellently. The cast’s dedication to meeting such high standards of work encapsulates their work ethic and the heart they poured into this performance.
The artistry that went behind the set design, created by Senior Izzy Cruz and her team, was nothing to scoff at! The details on the lockers, doors, and bathrooms were amazingly put together by the talented artists at LHS. One of my favorite details on set that I found was the Dead Kennedy’s symbol drawn onto the bathroom stall doors, a fun band reference sprinkled on the set was the highlight of my evening. The costuming was practical but lively. I especially enjoyed the zombie bride Halloween costume worn by Caitlyn Day, and the lion worn by Antonio Alexio, and all the outfits worn by the “Plastics” were top-notch 2000s fashion.
Overall, the production quality was extremely high and the efforts made to ensure a good experience for the audience were tremendous. Both the art and performance quality were to be revered, and this level of quality shows that our Drama Club has stepped up its game. The kindness of the cast and their willingness to sign Simon’s DVD was a lighthearted touch and brought lots of laughs along the way. The final rating comes out to a solid 10/10 due to the amazing effort put in and the ease with which we were able to engage with the performance.
