This year, with the help of Mrs. Zianio, junior and staff writer for The Cub, Allison Lewis, has started LHS’s first Black Student Union and it’s already off to a great start.
The Black Student Union, or BSU, is a club that offers a space for Black students and their allies to come together and celebrate Black culture and history, spread awareness of social justice issues, and exchange cultures to create an inclusive and tight-knit community.
The BSU plans to host many fun events: food festivals with traditional African, Caribbean, and African-American dishes, workshops with guest speakers, movie nights featuring Black filmmakers, events appreciating Black music and art, and community service opportunities.
The BSU will meet on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month, with the first meeting planned for October 22, in Mrs. Zianio’s room, B108.
President Allison Lewis says she is “really excited about the opportunities the BSU will create for us to come together, learn, and make an impact at school and in the community.”
The BSU is welcome to everyone, so if you want to celebrate and learn about Black culture or contribute to fostering a more inclusive community, we encourage you to join!
