The crowd was filled with excitement as the lights turned off, and the screams began. The screen turned red and all of a sudden there was a cartoon version of Sabrina walking on a sidewalk with animals surrounding her. The screen read: “The Short n’ Sweet Show,” and then transitioned to a video of Carpenter in a bubble bath, which symbolized her getting ready to go on stage. She was introduced by the sound of her name and the video stopped playing.
She then entered the stage in a glittery bathrobe. As audience’s screams grew even louder, the instrumental to her song “Taste” began playing. She started her bit of being too short to reach the microphone and then started singing. Everyone was excitedly screaming as she began singing her setlist, along with the thousands of people screaming the lyrics with her.
Sabrina Carpenter started her Short n’ Sweet Tour after her abrupt soar in popularity, due to her hit song “Espresso.” My friend and I managed to snag tickets to see her in Boston at TD Garden, and it was one of the best experiences of my life.
Despite having six albums released, Carpenter only played songs from her most recent albums, “Short N’ Sweet,” and “emails i can’t send.” Some fans were disappointed that they wouldn’t be able to hear some of her more nostalgic, earlier songs, but Carpenter said they “didn’t feel like her anymore.” But ignoring that fact, I think her setlist was pretty satisfying.
Something that sets her aside from other artists is her stage presence. She was very talkative with the crowd, keeping everyone entertained. She had an elaborately set stage, with staircases, platforms, and a small heart stage that elevated. It really added to the experience. She played different songs in different areas of the stage, doing different bits, like performing “Bed Chem” in a large bed during a slumber party, or “Espresso” with a steaming cup of coffee in her hand, waking up all her background dancers for one more song.
Additionally, her outfits add to the whole atmosphere. She wore sparkly two-pieces and bodysuits, silky cover-ups, and black, lacy jumpsuits. Carpenter knows that she’s a performer, and she delivers the whole pop-star bit in a way we haven’t seen in a while, which is very exciting.
Throughout the show, she played clips from a made-up old-fashioned TV show, which showed little inside jokes from her songs. For example, she has an ad for a fan, with text that reads “The ceiling fan is so nice” (a lyric from her song Please, Please, Please). It also included a skit called “Sabrina After Dark,” which showed clips from a Saturday Night Live-inspired episode.
One of my favorite moments of the tour was when she played Spin the Bottle, where instead of choosing people to kiss, the bottle picked cover songs to sing. There were a total of four covers she could choose from, and I was lucky enough to hear “Mamma Mia” by ABBA. I really like it when artists do a little something extra and play a cover. It’s not only a time to scream lyrics to beloved hits, but it’s also an opportunity to hear an artist’s vocals in different genres of song, which they otherwise wouldn’t play.
She ended her tour with her hit song “Espresso.” At the end of the song, pink confetti blasted through the arena, while everyone gave their final cheers. After Carpenter exited the stage, a video clip played of her comedically thanking the audience for coming to her tour. It really ends the concert on a positive note and makes you walk out feeling happy, excited, and with a wave of adrenaline.
The Short N’ Sweet concert was, in my opinion, the perfect concert experience. It had an excellent performance, satisfying visuals, and good vocals. Her songs give you the perfect chance to dance with your friends and scream-cry lyrics (perfect anger management!), which is all I look for in a concert.
Sabrina Carpenter put on such an amazing and thrilling performance. The experience was like no other, and I can definitely see myself at her next tour. Everything down to her sense of humor, and the vibe that she brought made me appreciate her on a whole new level. Leaving the arena, everyone had smiles on their faces and still found themselves humming her music on the way out. This was definitely a 10/10 experience for me and I was very happy that I got to attend. Attending concerts is such an exhilarating experience, and I would recommend attending the Short n’ Sweet Tour if you get the chance!
